Zaxbys Chicken Fingers or Wings?

Zaxby’s famous chicken comes in boneless or traditional wings and the chicken fingers-style. Any variety can be tossed in your choice of Zaxby’s sauce. My favorite is the Zaxbys boneless wings in a honey mustard wing sauce. It’s less messy than eating bone-in chicken and the boneless style can easily be transformed into a sandwich or enjoyed from a fork.

This fried chicken recipe is irresistibly tender and crispy thanks to the bite-sized boneless wings that get tenderized in a quick baking soda marinade and then hand-breaded to the best homemade chicken coating.

After nailing the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, I’ve been sticking to this fried chicken recipe since. It’s literally Restaurant-quality fried chicken with an impeccable crust.

Further ado, I’ve simplified the recipe for the Zaxby’s Chicken Copycat and after comparing both side-by-side with the real thing, I was told the homemade chicken was way better!

Honey Mustard Sauce vs Hot Honey Mustard Sauce

The main difference between both honey mustard sauces is that the hot honey mustard sauce has cayenne pepper for additional spice. Whereas, regular honey mustard sauce is more of a yellow hue due to the lack of ground cayenne.

A Honey mustard sauce recipe can be used as a dipping sauce to French Fries, chicken wing sauce, or salad dressing. I do not find the Hot Honey Mustard Sauce to be too spicy. In fact, it is rated on the wimpy side of its signature sauces. Both honey mustard sauces are available at Zaxby’s near me. Zaxby’s sells their signature sauces for $.25 apiece.

Does Zaxby’s Sell Their Sauce?

All of Zaxby’s sauces and dressings are sold at Zaxby’s Restaurants for twenty-five cents apiece. Depending on what you order off the Zaxby’s menu, their sauces can come complimentary like the Zax sauce.

What’s in Zaxby’s Honey mustard Sauce?

This easy homemade honey mustard sauce only needs 4 ingredients! My homemade honey mustard sauce recipe is made from simple pantry ingredients!

Zaxbys Boneless Wings Ingredients: 

According to Zaxbys Nutrition and Allergen Guide ( not available on their website anymore ), the boneless wings in hot honey mustard sauce contain eggs and wheat with gluten sensitivities. Zaxby’s Hot Honey Mustard Sauce Ingredients: 

  • Ranch Dressing- I used Hidden Valley bottled ranch dressing.
  • Prepared Yellow Mustard- it is important to use the original yellow mustard, not dijon!
  • Honey- choose mild-flavored clover honey.
  • Cayenne Pepper- although cayenne pepper is a spicy spice it does not make the honey mustard sauce too hot.

How To Make Zaxbys Honey Mustard Sauce?

To make a Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce that tastes like Zaxby’s, simply whisk together all the ingredients until smooth. Then serve this honey mustard dipping sauce as a chicken sauce over crispy fried chicken (wing sauce), or as a salad dressing. Kids love a chicken tender meal with honey mustard dipping sauce as is!

  1. First, measure the ranch dressing in a 2-cup measuring cup.
  2. Add the honey, prepared yellow mustard, and cayenne pepper.
  3. With a small whish whisk together all the ingredients.
  4. Pour into a squeezable bottle when using as a salad dressing. If using as a wing sauce pour over fried chicken or put the sauce into a serving bowl for dipping.

This homemade honey mustard sauce can keep for months in the fridge. Store the honey mustard sauce in an airtight container or squeezable bottle for up to 3 months in the fridge.

What To Serve With Zaxby’s Boneless Wings?

Zaxby’s wings can be served with a side of Ranch Dressing or a Honey Mustard Sauce. Here is a list of foods that go with fried chicken.

  • Celery sticks
  • Raw Veggies- like carrot sticks or cucumber slices.
  • Bread- like a dinner roll, a slice of Texas toast, or biscuit.
  • Dipping Sauces- Copycat Chick-fil-A Sauce, or Ketchup.



  1. Make a Zaxby’s chicken sandwich by adding the fried chicken pieces to a bun or Texas toast slice.
  2. Arrange chicken fingers on a plate and add the dipping sauces separately for kids to choose and pick what flavors they’d like.
  3. Serve chicken with a side of Slaw.
  4. Make a Zaxby’s boneless wings meal by serving with a side of fries, and a thick slice of Texas toast.
  5. Toss fried chicken pieces in this Zaxbys Honey Mustard Sauce.

This Copycat Zaxbys Chicken Recipe is just like the Restaurants Boneless Wings in Hot Honey Mustard Sauce. Hand-breaded chicken tossed in


  • Dutch Oven
  • Measuring tools
  • Sheet Pan and Cooling Rack


  • 3 lbs chicken breast (cut into strips or chunks)


  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 Tbsp seasoned salt (Lawry's)
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp Adobo seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp onion powder and garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp sugar

Wet Batter:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk



  • Whisk together the wet batter and set aside.
  • In a large bowl combine the breading.
  • Dip the chicken pieces into the wet batter then into the dry breading and press coating into the meat.
  • Shake off any excess flour and fry in 2-inches of oil until done and meat reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Arrange the fried chicken pieces onto a sheet pan lined with a cooling rack. Keep warm in an oven until all the chicken pieces finish frying.
  • Toss in Zaxbys Honey Mustard Sauce and serve with crunchy celery sticks.


Make a double batch of my Zaxbys Honey Mustard Sauce to coat this recipe of boneless chicken wings. 
I like to add 2 teaspoons of white pepper and 1 teaspoon of black pepper.
