Who wouldn’t love a fluffy pizza dough smothered in a creamy layer of sausage gravy, gooey melted cheese, and scrambled eggs?!  Which by the way crumbled sausage and white sauce is a total shortcut to pizza sauce when you make my freezer sausage gravy.

My friend recently shared a pizza dough recipe that her 11-year old makes! That’s how easy this pizza crust comes together! It’s literally a mix and ready dough the instant it comes together and much quicker homemade than running to the store! The results–shockingly impressive for an easy pizza dough recipe!

One morning, she had sent me a text of her breakfast pizza that she made for her family. It looked so delicious and her family approved of the breakfast idea. The toppings were heavy cream for the Country gravy, sausage, eggs, and cheese. If you have leftover country gravy use it as the sauce and just crumble sausage but I typically have sausage gravy in the freezer that I like to reach for breakfast. The whole idea was a complete success and a total winner for my family too!

My idea of toppings for a breakfast pizza–is eggs and sausage. Perhaps that’s because I’ve bumped between two kinds–school breakfast pizza and Casey’s breakfast pizza. I seem to have extra sausage gravy on hand because I’ve learned that Country gravy (aka sausage gravy) freezes very well! Eggs and sausage just remind me of something from a breakfast menu! Keep in mind you can top a breakfast pizza with any additional toppings like cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, or bell peppers for a Western-style pizza! And leftovers can easily be transformed into a lunch idea or breakfast dinner!

So what pizza sauce goes on Breakfast Pizza? According to Casey’s breakfast pizza menu, you can order 3 kinds of breakfast pizzas, in 2 sauces–sausage gravy or cheese sauce. Even the frozen Red Baron Breakfast pizza does gravy instead of tomato sauce! So Country gravy sauce, cheese, and fluffy scrambled eggs it is! Once you try sausage gravy as pizza sauce your breakfast pizza game will change big time!!

  • Sage- this is like the secret ingredient spice! just a pinch can transform the aroma to “breakfast.”

You can make any pizza dough or pizza crust recipe that works for your family. Don’t just buy the crescent roll dough when we have a large collection of pizza dough recipes to experiment with but if breakfast needs to be done in a cinch make this pizza dough recipe or use these dough ideas:

Storing Homemade Pizza?

Homemade pizza can be prepared and stored in many different ways.

  • Par-bake and top with all the breakfast toppings, then Freeze.
  • Place leftovers covered into the refrigerator and reheat later.
  • Make-Ahead and keep in the refrigerator then reheat in a toaster oven.
  • Pre-make the pizza crust and assemble pizza the morning of.

Storing: already made pizza or pizza dough keeps in the fridge well. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. My mom likes to place the leftover pizza into freezer bags and later toast to reheat.

How to Make Breakfast Pizza with Sausage Gravy Step-By-Step:

 

  1. Make the pizza crust: in a pint measuring cup, whisk together the yeast, sugar, warm water, salt, and oil. Let sit 5 minutes to foam. Pour into the flour and form dough into a ball. The dough is ready when it no longer sticks to your hands.
  2. Divide the dough into two well-greased cast-iron pans: spread about 1 cup of sausage gravy over each crust. Top with cheese and scrambled eggs. Sprinkle the top with a pinch of ground sage.
  3. Bake- in a pre-heated 500°F for 7-10 minutes or until crust is browned and the pizza is done.

We don’t own a pizza stone because we get fantastic crispy crusts on our pizza dough using regular pans here’s how. Bake pizza at the highest oven temperature! Professional pizza ovens go up to 500°F + and that is the secret to getting that perfectly crisp pizza crust!

I personally interchange between 3 different pizza pans when I bake pizza. For a Domino’s Pizza Crust, I like to use this pizza screen just like the pizzeria!

This perforated pizza pan and the pizza screen are my favorites! I like to lightly grease my performed pan before placing the crust on top. Pizza Hut makes their stuffed crust pizza on a perforated pizza pan and it leaves small little holes on the bottom of the crust.

I didn’t know I’d come to love a cast-iron skillet for making pizza! After my friend sent me pictures of her amazing pizza in a cast-iron it became my favorite way to make a deep-dish kind of pizza! The pizza dough just comes out so fluffy and crisp! And a generous amount of oil is the secret to getting a nicely browned crust.

Who Is Casey’s Pizza?

If you’re not familiar with Casey’s pizza, it’s sold in a Southwestern chain of convenience stores (gas station/mini-marts.) I have never tried their pizza but if I’ll ever be in Iowa, I would love to try the pizza they sell for breakfast! Here is an interesting copycat of Casey’s Pizza!

  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 Tbsp heaping yeast

  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4 Tbsp oil

    You said we can par bake the pizza crust, then top and freeze. How long would you par bake? Looking for it to be done through but not browned? Think par baking in a disposable pie tin, cooling, then topping and freezing would work well? I found your site while looking for freeze ahead biscuits, and I am excited to start trying your methods. My daughter has Celiac and all the prepared/frozen foods are so expensive, and many of them are not even that good. I will be using your freezer tips/advice and modifying recipes to be GF. Going to try her gf biscuit recipe with your chicken pot pie. Looks delish!

      Happy to know you discovered our blog, welcome! I’d par-bake pizza crust for a freezer meal, so to do that pierce the dough throughout the center and bake at high for about 5 minutes or so you want the crust to look slightly hardened but not golden, it should still look pale. Then you’d cool and top with your favorite pizza toppings and flash freeze before wrapping.
