BEST Mushroom Gravy

My aunt makes one of the BEST mushroom gravies! Paired with creamy mashed potatoes, its simply superb! The rich brown color comes from toasted flour and carmelized plump mushrooms. This is the best way to make any brown gravy, from scratch! To really bring out the mushroom flavor, I used a couple of these mushroom stock cubes, but any mushroom stock will give it that mushroom aroma. And did you know Better than Bullion carry a mushroom base? Even beef stock could work! Imagine the possibilities with the perfect mushroom gravy recipe!

Could I make gravy without broth?

Broth really brings out the flavor to any gravy! Whether it would be chicken, beef, vegetable or mushroom broth there are many flavored broths to enhance the dish flavors. Yes, you could make it broth-less, but salt would drastically need to be added among other spices to get a flavorful gravy.

Where can I buy mushroom broth?

I buy my mushroom broth cubes at a local Polish Deli but found the same exact mushroom stock cubes at amazon! I’m sure Better than bullion beef or mushroom base would work just as good.

How to make brown gravy from scratch;

Here are somethings that will bring out the brown hue in your gravy:

  • Toast your flour
  • Use dark colored broth (beef or mushroom)
  • Caramelize your mushrooms and onions
  • Don’t use too much dairy products

Do you have to toast the flour?

YES! If you want a brown gravy its a must! For a lighter gravy you can skip toasting the flour.

What mushrooms work best for mushroom gravy?

I would recommend common white button mushrooms or baby bella mushrooms for making gravy. The two kind are available in most grocery stores and shrink to plump sized mushrooms, suitable for gravies.
