This is like the canned cherry pie filling from the store but HOMEMADE! Make this cherry pie filling recipe for sweet buns, crepes, pies, cheesecake topping, etc…

I recently canned LOTS of hand-picked sweet cherries (thanks to my in-laws and children for picking them) and needless to say I ended up canning 12, 1-liter jars and making a cherry pie filling from one of them…

These were made from store-bought sour cherries (or referred to as dark morello cherries) which you can find at Aldi, Dollar Tree, or Slavic grocery stores. Jarred cherries can be used in so many different ways. Cakes (as the syrup & filling), a thick jello-ye filling like this, which can then be filled into sweet buns, pies or crepes or topping on cheesecakes.

Making a homemade cherry pie filling recipe is easy! But I can imagine fresh cherries and some juice or sweetened water in place of the jarred cherries could work. Make this homemade cherry pie filling recipe from fresh or jarred cherries and see the homemade difference!

INGREDIENTS for jarred cherries:
  • 1 (24oz) jar of sour cherries
  • 5 TBSP sugar
  • 5 tsp cornstarch
INGREDIENTS for fresh cherries:
  • 2 cups sweet or sour cherries, pitted (any dark variation of cherries)
  • 1 cup of cherry juice or sweetened water
  • 5 TBSP sugar
  • 5 tsp cornstarch
DIRECTIONS to make Cherry Pie Filling:

1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the juice of the cherries (reserving the cherries for later), sugar and cornstarch. Bring to a boil and simmer until thickened. Stir in the reserved cherries and continue to simmer until thickened to desired consistency.

2. FOR FRESH CHERRIES: In a small saucepan whisk the juice or sweetened water, sugar, and cornstarch over hi heat until thickened. Stir in cherries and simmer to desired consistency.

Great recipe! I added a teaspoon or two of lemon concentrate and a half a teaspoon of vanilla to add a little depth and brightness.

This is amazing. I added a tsp of almond extract and it was superb on the cheesecake. Happy holidays

    December 24th, Christmas Eve, 2020,

    Happy Holidays to You!!

Love, love, love this recipe. Simple and delicious.
I had a jar of sour cherries I’d usually bake in a pie for my brother at Christmas, but with Covid and all, well, no visits. Montreal is in lockdown, again, and that means shelter in place.
But in honor of my big bro, I made cheese cake and served it up (yes, to myself)
with this delicious sour cherry sauce concoction. Superb! Thx!!

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay positive, Namaste.
    Mara
