If you like bakery-style store-bought M&M cookies then wait until you try this m&m cookie recipe! Find out how to get that crackly top, m&m garnish, and a delicious cookie recipe that resembles a bakery-style cookie all in this post! 

Now a good recipe has much to do with the outcome of a pretty cookie but with these helpful tips, you can make that crackly top and pretty garnished cookie with chocolate chips or candy poking out on about any type of cookie! To start use a scoop to make more uniform cookies and flatten dough gently from the tops. I think the amount of shortening and butter here helps tremendously, for the cookie to spread out and flatten nicely on its own. And the thinner the cookie the more candy is likely to show. Now to get a nice crackly top I like to lightly push down the tops of each cookie quickly right after baking (using an oven mitten.) Then garnish the cookies with a few M&M’s by sticking them right into the tops of each cookie. This only works on hot cookies right after the oven so you’ll need to work fast because the more they cool the less they’ll likely stick to the dough. The pudding mix may have much to do with the taste that resembles the store-bought taste so definitely give it a try and follow these tips!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 stick of butter, unsalted
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • dash of salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 (3.5 ounces) pkg of vanilla pudding mix or white chocolate pudding mix
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cups m&m’s plus more for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large bowl beat the butter, shortening, sugars, egg, vanilla, and salt until creamy.

2. Stir together the flour, dry pudding mix, and baking soda. Add to the creamed butter mixture and beat over low speed until well combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and m&m’s.

3. Scoop dough into 1-inch balls and lightly flatten tops. Bake in a pre-heated 375° oven for 10 minutes.

4. Flatten the tops of the cookies by lightly patting each cookie with an oven mitten. Quickly insert 3-4 m&m’s into each cookie and completely cool.
