I have attempted to replicate Olive Garden Breadsticks and none have come as good as these! If you like Olive Garden’s breadsticks then you have yet to try this copycat Olive Garden’s Breadsticks Recipe! 

Yesterday, I decided to make the Five-Cheese Ziti al Forno along with some breadsticks. Since my previous attempts on olive gardens breadsticks didn’t meet the expectations, I was looking to make a recipe that could possibly meet the requirements. I ended up combining a mixture of some recipes (my Italian loaves recipecrusty pizza dough,  a recipe from a Mennonite cookbook were among the mix…) After adding an egg and adjusting some ingredients a breadstick recipe was born– THE BEST breadsticks from all the ones I have ever made! They turned out chewy and just amazing! Make them with the five-cheese ziti and see how AMAZING they taste for yourself! They also re-heat so nicely! Re-heat, brush with oil or melted butter and sprinkle with some garlic salt right before serving–DELICIOUS!

Ingredients for Olive Garden Breadsticks:

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 2 TBSP sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 5 TBSP oil
  • 1 egg

Directions to make Olive Garden Breadsticks:

1. Combine the water, yeast, and sugar and allow it to poof while preparing other ingredients.

2. Place the dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, and Parmesan cheese) into a large bowl or bread machine. Stir in the egg and oil and pour in the yeast mixture. Gently stir until dough comes together. Knead by hand for 5 minutes or if using a bread machine set on dough settings. Allow dough to rise until doubled (up to an hour after kneading.)

3. Transfer dough unto a lightly floured surface and evenly divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Cut each piece into 8 pieces and roll each piece out to a 7-inch stick. Place breadsticks into well-greased pans (oil is key for a nice crust) and allow to rise 20 minutes.

4. Brush breadsticks with oil and bake in a preheated 425° F oven for 8-10 minutes. Brush hot breadsticks with melted butter or olive oil and generously sprinkle garlic salt over each breadstick before serving.

So the yeast proofing ratio between the water/sugar/yeast doesn’t seem to result in the type of proofing I’m used to. I usually come out with a bubbly foamy yeast in the middle but it’s surrounded by what looks like excess water? Is this normal? The recipe looks like it uses a lot of water and a very small amount of yeast in comparison to what I’m used to.
