These easy tuna melts are one of the easiest open-faced sandwiches to put together for lunch! Canned tuna fish is dressed up with mayo, onions, tomatoes and cheese then smothered over bread and baked, creating one of creamiest tuna salad sandwiches!

Canned tuna fish comes in so handy for recipes like this! Tuna melts are one of the quickest things to make since you only need 5 ingredients of which most have. They’re tasty and super easy! Eat them cold or skip the bread and use as a tuna salad  over lettuce or a dip!

What are tuna melts?

Tuna melts are hot sandwiches typically made from canned tuna fish. The filling is a mayonnaise based tuna salad and is usually topped with cheese and heated through until melted.

Open-Faced or Closed?

Open-faced tuna melts are the easiest! But if you want to add a piece of bread over the top go right ahead! Tuna melts can be made either way, however it’s really preference.

Ingredients:

  • 2 small cans of tuna
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/4 cup diced onion
  • 1/3 cup mayo
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheese

How to make a tuna melt:

  1. First, start with making a basic tuna salad. Combine all the filling ingredients, reserving 1/2 cup grated cheese for the tops.
  2. Place all the bread slices into a cookie sheet.
  3. Spread a heaping tablespoon of the tuna salad over each slice and sprinkle tops with reserved cheese.
  4. Bake in a 400° oven until cheese melts and bread toasts.
  5. Enjoy or serve to a side of Cabbage Salad with an oil and Vinegar Dressing to give the creamy tuna sandwich some zest!

Ingredients 

Tuna Melts Ingredients:

  • 10 oz canned tuna, (2 small cans)
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1/4 cup onions, diced
  • 1/3 cup mayo
  • 1 1/2 cups grated Colby Jack cheese, divided
  • 1/2 French baguette, sliced

Instructions

How to Make Easy Tuna Melts:

  • Pre-heat oven 400°F. Arrange baguette slices over a sheet pan. Set aside.
  • Mix all the filling ingredients reserving 1/2 cup of cheese for the tops.
  • Spread mixture over slices and bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes or until toasted and cheesy.

Notes

  • can use left over turkey, cooked chicken, canned chicken or grilled chicken in place of tuna.
  • Mozzarella or other cheese blends can be used.
